Highlighted were accomplishments over the past year including overcoming the loss of a one-time, $200,000 state grant for Youth Summer Employment. Mayor Lang, the Chief Elected Official of the workforce investment area, mobilized the community and state partners; and with the support of the WIB, New Directions, and many local partners, the Mayor’s Summer Jobs Program is 22 opportunities over the 514 slots created last year. Efforts will continue well into the summer to meet the Mayor’s vision of serving every youth that applies.

Mayor Scott W. Lang, in partnership with the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board, Inc. (WIB) and New Directions Southcoast, Inc., is planning to kick-off a summer jobs campaign for New Bedford youth ages 14 and up. This effort will reach out to local business owners and the community as a whole in order to solicit both financial contributions and job pledges for the Summer of 2008. These jobs and donations will be used to put the City’s youth to work and thereby have an impact on the city and community as a whole. Last summer, this program was a great success and it is hoped that this upcoming summer will demonstrate even more success.

BOSTON---Monday, January 14, 2008—Governor Deval Patrick today announced the designation of $107,000 in Rapid Response set-aside grant funds to the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board that will provide intensive training to 25 laid off workers from New Bedford based MultiLayer Coating Technologies, including enrollment of 10 employees in a bio-tech training program at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
