Youth Theatre in New Bedford: In the next few weeks, it's practically guaranteed that I'll get asked the age-old question: "What did you do on your summer vacation?" Luckily, Summer 2007 has provided me with a wonderful answer to that question.

New Bedford - the true worth of our community's young people

In the next few weeks, it's practically guaranteed that I'll get asked the age-old question: "What did you do on your summer vacation?" Luckily, Summer 2007 has provided me with a wonderful answer to that question.

You see, this summer, I have had the privilege of working with dozens of this area's most talented young people on a theatrical production with my performance group, New Bedford YouthREP. The production, a staging of the Broadway hit A Chorus Line, has given me a profound appreciation of the next generation of New Bedford's citizens and leaders. In rehearsal after rehearsal, my expectations have been exceeded by their amazing combination of determination, hard work, and incredible talent. Their growth and development as performers (and as young adults) reinforced the impetus behind creating New Bedford YouthREP in the Summer of 2006. These "kids" deserve an outlet for their creative voices and their important personal narratives. The young people of this area have a lot say, which may not be surprising to many; but the intelligence and grace through which they make themselves heard is nothing short of revelatory.

My one wish for this first article is that the people of New Bedford come to realize the true worth of our community's young people. Too often their accomplishments go unnoticed and unrecognized. Too often the negative actions of a few are allowed to unfairly represent an entire segment of our community. It's critical that we as a community continue to offer opportunities (and hope) to these young people. If we don't, they will leave for greener pastures--it's as simple as that. And, if what I've witnessed this summer is any indication, the place they need to be is right here in New Bedford. Their creative and energy and talent will ensure a bright future for all of us. As someone who has chosen to stay in New Bedford, I will continue to try to provide a compelling reason for our young people to remain here for years to come. I hope you all will do the same.
