New Bedford, Massachusetts - At a press conference today, New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang and other New Bedford area elected officials joined with Mark Dickinson of Dickinson Development Corp. of Quincy, developer of “Riverside Landing,” the retail and mixed-use project located off of Coggeshall Street in New Bedford, to announce the site’s anchor tenant. The Tewksbury, Massachusetts-based supermarket chain, “DeMoulas Market Basket,” which operates 59 stores throughout the New England region and has estimated annual revenue of $3.5 billon, will open a New Bedford store at the Riverside Landing site. The store will create approximately 500 permanent jobs.
“This development project is truly important to New Bedford in that it creates both jobs and an expanded tax base, and we are happy to welcome such a well-known, high-quality company to the city,” said Mayor Scott W. Lang. “Market Basket is known for its commitment to its customers and to its employees. Family owned and operated, it is a company that strives to deliver quality groceries at very affordable prices, and it will be an excellent addition to our community.”
“Transforming underused land into an attractive, productive property gives me a true sense of accomplishment,” noted Mark Dickinson. “A successful development must fit in with its surroundings, and new construction should connect with the community to bring new vitality. I have had the privilege of working with Market Basket, as they have been a tenant at our Merrimac Plaza in Methuen for over 20 years. What they offer to the community in terms of quality and value are unmatched and we are thrilled to be able to bring them to the good people of New Bedford. DeMoulas’ Market Basket at Riverside Landing will truly be an asset.”
Arthur T. Demoulas, President of Demoulas Market Basket, said, “We are very happy to be building a store at Riverside Landing and are committed to becoming part of the New Bedford community. We operate on some very important but simple principles instilled in the company by my father, the late Telemachus ‘Mike’ Demoulas. Every day we set out to treat people with respect, keeping their shopping experience simple, offering quality products with great value and service, all in a clean store. Our best reward is a satisfied customer.”
Founded in 1917 by Athanasios “Arthur” and Efronsini Demoulas of Greece, the supermarket chain originated as a small food store in Lowell, Massachusetts known for its fresh meats, especially lamb. Demoulas noted that the modern day Market Basket remains true to the store’s original model, offering great values on quality products and treating both customers and employees with the utmost respect. Demoulas said customers across New England turn to Market Basket for excellent products and competitive pricing and communities find in the corporation a good employer and exemplary corporate citizen.
Matthew Morrissey, Executive Director of the New Bedford Economic Development Council, noted, “The announcement of Market Basket as the anchor tenant at Riverside Landing solidifies the full development of this mixed-used project over the next few years. This is a true catalyst for the revitalization of this area of the city.”
