Have a whale of a time at the 19th annual Wine Festival and Auction at Custom House Square in New Bedford on Sept. 18 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit WHALE’s preservation, neighborhood restoration, and advocacy activities.
Presented by Cardoza’s Wine & Spirits, the Wine Festival and Auction is the most comprehensive wine tasting event south of Boston.
“The Wine Festival serves as a celebration of the preservation work that WHALE is most noted for,” said Richard Cardoza of Cardoza’s Wine & Spirits.
WHALE is a nonprofit organization that has rescued and restored historic buildings in New Bedford since 1962.
The price of your ticket allows you to taste and sample all you want. Tickets are $70 for WHALE members and Cardoza's JUST REWARDS Members and $85 at the door.
Taste from over 150 fine wines from around the world, champagnes from France, vintage and tawny ports, cognacs, single malt scotches, cocktails, and domestic and imported beers and ales.
Drinks are poured by professionals who can answer any and all of your questions about the wine and spirits and give you great tips about the best wine and food pairings.
Speaking of food, here’s a sample of the night’s menu:
Antonio's Chicken Mozambique & Cacoila; Bayside of Wesport’s Indian Pudding; The Brick Pizzeria’s Napoletana pizza; Café Arpeggio’s homemade ice cream; Café Balena’s pasta, chocolate-covered strawberries and bread; Café Cabana’s pizza and meatballs; Cobblestone’s Chicken Mozambique with rice and spinach, feta and tomato pasta salad; assorted tapas from Cork and Cardoza's Food Emporium; Freestone City Grill’s chowder and bruschetta; Greek salad from the Healthy Grille; BBQ Ribs from the Ice Chest; hot pressed sandwiches from Mirasol’s Café; New England Clam Jam’s chowder and It’s Thyme Catering’s shrimp skewers; No Problemo’s cheesy quesadillas; crab cakes, salad and bread from Not Your Average Joe’s; chicken tortellini from The Pasta House; chicken tenders from The Rose Alley Ale House; and sausage with potato, peppers and onions from the Stone Forge and don’t forget the Union City Grille.
So eat and drink to your heart’s content while listening to live music of the Steve Pardo Quartet under an outdoor tent in historic downtown New Bedford. Custom House Square is located at the corner of William and Second streets in New Bedford.
“For wine-lovers, the Wine Fest is an opportunity to taste different wines, learn about wine and food pairings, and to get a sense of what you really enjoy. The wine vendors are only too happy to tell you what you can serve with each wine or spirit at home," said Lisa Bergson, executive director of WHALE
“But the great thing about the Wine Fest” continued Bergson, “is that it’s not just for wine connoisseurs—it's for everyone. Maybe you'll fall in love with some fabulous microbrew you've never heard of.”
The Wine Fest is the perfect place to learn how to pair food with drink: enjoy Antonio's Restaurant’s chicken Mozambique and caçoila with a Portuguese white wine. No Problemo’s quesidillas are a perfect match with German Riesling or Oyster Bay New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. And the chocolate strawberries of Café Balena are perfect with Port.

Founded in 1962, when urban renewal threatened entire neighborhoods, WHALE's founders were committed to saving New Bedford’s history and architectural heritage from “death by neglect and the tyranny of the bulldozer.”
“WHALE was established to address the blight and neglect in the waterfront historic district. Today, some 47 years later, this is a neighborhood we are all proud of and it is easy to see that WHALE’s efforts have transformed the way it looks forever,” said Peter Hawes, WHALE’s President of the Board.
“However, WHALE must be ever vigilant: there are other historic neighborhoods— like the Washington Square neighborhood— that need our attention and resources. WHALE’s work is needed more today than ever before.”
