NEW BEDFORD, MA – December 31, 2009 – The City of New Bedford announces the opening of a water transportation link between the City and Woods Hole that will be a vital link for commuters between Woods Hole and New Bedford. The New Bedford/Woods Hole Link will provide affordable, convenient transportation for people doing business, research, studying or traveling on a regular weekday basis between the two ports of call.
According to Kristin Decas, Executive Director of the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission, “The New Bedford/Woods Hole Link, which begins service January 4th, 2010, gives city residents working in Woods Hole and Falmouth a viable option to driving through Cape traffic. With its Monday through Friday schedule, the Woods Hole Link commuter ferry will help people reduce mileage on their vehicles while reducing their overall carbon footprint.”
The Cuttyhunk Ferry Company provides the Woods Hole Link commuter ferry service aboard the M/V Cuttyhunk, allowing passengers to be in Woods Hole by 7:30 am and back in New Bedford by 5:40 pm. Free parking is available on State Pier for those using the Woods Hole Link from New Bedford. Tickets are sold aboard the M/V Cuttyhunk, located on the right as you enter State Pier, and reservations, which are required, can be made by calling 508-992-0200 or by emailing info@cuttyhunkferryco.com.
"I am honored to partner with New Bedford and to invest my vessel and services in this important endeavor," said Captain Jono Billings, owner and operator of Cuttyhunk Ferry Company. "Exciting and stimulating growth continues to take place in the seaport of New Bedford which plays an ever-increasing role in all things ocean. The backbone of the ocean-related industry is right here in the City while the science to support this industry is well-represented in Woods Hole. The time has come to make this natural water transportation link, not to mention commuting by ferry is more relaxing than driving."
“The New Bedford Economic Development Council is proud of its role in making the New Bedford/Woods Hole Link an option for commuters traveling between New Bedford and Woods Hole,” said Matthew Morrissey, Executive Director of the NBEDC. “The price of the Woods Hole Link tickets, especially the commuter pass, makes it a cost-effective option as well as an eco-friendly one compared to paying for gas and wear and tear on a car or truck,” he noted.
The Link commuter ferry costs $9 for one-way and $18 round-trip, and 10-pass commuter books are available for $72. Starting in January, tickets will be available aboard the M/V Cuttyhunk which provides the New Bedford/Woods Hole Link Ferry service. Call 508-992-0200 for reservations, which are required, and to confirm schedule changes due to inclement weather. The M/V Cuttyhunk, providing the Woods Hole Link service, is located on the right as you enter the State Pier. On the Woods Hole side, the M/V Cuttyhunk will be docked at the Steamship Authority dock.
“Commuter transportation between New Bedford and Woods Hole is important to the economic development of both communities,” said New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang. “Being able to offer scientists, students, health care workers, general and maritime businesses a viable, affordable and regular link between New Bedford and Woods Hole is key to building stronger economic and cultural ties between the City and the Woods Hole community.”
The New Bedford/Woods Hole Link schedule is available online at www.nbwhferry.com and reservations can be made via email at info@cuttyhunkferryco.com.
