Educational programs that include video clips, pictures and sound help to bring environmental education into the classroom. The addition of a new projector will allow Lloyd Center educators to provide multimedia presentations at schools that do not have the necessary technology and/or cannot travel to outdoor field programs.
The Lloyd Center has been working to integrate new technology into its existing programs, in an effort to stay current with advances in technology. The Lloyd Center’s year-long Feathery Focus program is being implemented in third grade classrooms in Dartmouth, Fairhaven, Westport and Fall River. Several of the units include PowerPoint presentations that aid in teaching bird songs, field marks and general bird identification. Currently, the Lloyd Center can only support one multimedia program per day, even though there is staff out at two, sometimes even three different schools per day.
A second projector will allow flexibility for new programs to be developed that incorporate multimedia technology into the Lloyd Center’s hands-on inquiry-based science programs. Having limited technology inhibits developing and scheduling education and outreach programs as well as research presentations, even when there are staff members available. An additional projector will make a significant difference in the number of programs the Center can offer in its effort to inspire future generations of environmental stewards and raise environmental conscientiousness in the general public.
The Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts was launched in 1995 by a group of dedicated volunteers who wanted to create a new avenue for encouraging philanthropy in Southeastern Massachusetts. The Community Foundation's mission is to improve and protect the quality of life in our region by promoting collaboration and understanding among all members of the community; by providing a flexible permanent vehicle for donors with diverse interests; by protecting the community's endowment through prudent investment and effective stewardship; by expanding the community's endowment through appropriate solicitation; and by ascertaining community needs and opportunities and acting as an informed grantmaker.
Lloyd Center For the Environment
The Lloyd Center is the only area organization focused on educating the public about coastal and watershed issues, and conducting research on coastal ecosystems and endangered species. The Lloyd Center serves individuals, agencies, and organizations in southeastern New England (Rhode Island to Boston to Cape Cod).
The Center cooperates on a broader level in coastal, environmental, and educational programming throughout New England, nationally and internationally.
The Center's school-based activities further expand their reach to urban audiences. A scholarship program also provides space for ten urban New Bedford students, mostly African-American and other minorities, in the Summer Program.
