It gets harder every day for me to hide my contempt for the cowards who lurk amongst us… This Veteran’s day I solemnly gave thanks to the millions of men and women who have proudly served this nation…
I was heartened by the news coming out of Iraq that the surge of troops has led to a dramatic drop in violence… (Down some 73% in the last four months)…
Then upon opening the news paper today I find that the Democrats tried to tie 1 billion dollars in earmarks (Pork Barrel Spending) to the appropriations bill that was intended to refinance the war effort… Their effort only failed because sharp eyed Republican House and Senate members (Like Kay Bailey Hutchinson) spotted the money and line vetoed it… Make no mistake about it, this Democratic congress has no interest in victory and being so heavily invested in defeat, instead opts for bribing their constituencies with pork barrel projects…
I recall the Democrats castigating the current adminstration about the incompetence at the V.A. & the Armies aging Medical facilities like Walter Reed, wouldn't 1 billion dollars go a long way to shoring up both? Quite obviously, as far as democrats are concerned, it is infinitely more important that we have another stretch of West Virginia highway named after Grand Kleagle Robert Byrd than a properly funded Army with good medical facilities...
When I was growing up my neighbor across James St. was a fellow named Larry Dean… He held down a job as a carpet salesman for Sears… To look at him you wouldn’t think much of him, he wasn’t an imposing figure, tall but frail looking and the Volkswagen Bug he drove was hardly the vehicle of choice for a 1970’s he-man… I never knew much about his past until Christmas 1980...
After a little liquid coaxing Larry began regaling my friends and I with tales of his exploits as an anti-Aircraft Gunner in thePacific…From the Coral Sea to Midway, right up until the final naval battle off Okinawa Larry Dean was there, (that's 4 years of continuous combat service)… The story that had us most enthralled was his account of “The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot”; for those unaware this was the first time the Japanese had used the Kamikaze in a concerted offensive tactic… Though several Kamikaze’s did in fact score hits, the vast majority were shot down hence the name of the battle… He told me how his loader got his thumb torn off during one of the attacks, but never once failed to keep his gun stocked with ammo…
Here's how explained the loaders extraordinary commitment...
“They say in battle when the going gets tough, fighting for God & Country are not what keeps you going, it’s fighting for the man on either side of you… In the Navy that means you are fighting for the life of your ship because the ship represents life itself…
I remember Larry telling us that although they were fearful of what might happen to them in that immediate battle, to a man they knew that any country which used such an extreme tactic as the Kamikaze had to be in very dire straits…
As I listen to the cowards calling for troop withdrawal, even as the fortunes of war are changing so dramatically in our favor in Iraq, I wonder how these same cowards would have responded to the opening battles fought in World War II…
Would losing Wake Island and the Philippines be a reason to quit the fight? Would losing an entire division at Casserine Pass be a reason to cede North Africa to the Axis forces? The death of 8,000 men on a tiny atoll named Tarawa a reason to sue for a peaceful resolution with Japan?
The post 60’s liberal politician views the world through a very narrow microscope… To them victory is defined by their activism… Victory is claimed when:
A ten year old can guilt her parents into buying a Hybrid…
Soldiers start “fragging” their commanding officers…
College kids, spurred on by their Marxist professors, take to the streets and denounce their own governments policies…
Or better yet take to the streets of our enemies to act as “Human Shields”…
It’s time we as Americans take a long look at what liberalism and entitlement have wrought on this society… I heard a Hispanic College “Kid” interviewed on a news show recently, he was asked if he ever thought about joining the Military after he graduated… His response ?
What’s the military ever done for me?
How can a person be in college and not have an iron clad grasp on the answer to that question? Simple when Liberal academics define this country by purely imperial terms, without pointing to the Geo-Political realities of the day, one could easily come to a conclusion that we as a country have been overly militarialistic… However, with the arguable exceptions of Vietnam, and the Spanish American War, when properly narrated in their historical context, all military intervention by this country has been warranted, …
Don’t believe me try this simple line of reasoning… Ask yourself where would the world be today if not for the strength and courage of the U.S. Military, and the historic resolve to win, no matter the cost, inherent in all our finest leaders?
In this age of instant communication it’s easy for our enemy to get out its propaganda, what disgusts me is the way Western Liberals apply it like a cure-all for their cowardice…
