(New Bedford)- Ana Moura, whose soulful and riveting interpretation of her land's captivating fado style has made her a star in Europe, brings her magic to The Zeiterion Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 4th 2012 at 8 p.m. as part of her U.S. tour.
The young singer has become a leading exponent of fado—a poetic, deeply expressive genre which personifies the Portuguese psyche as it explores such universal themes as lost love, separation, and longing. As Moura explains, "It's very special because it's all about emotions and feelings. It needs no translation".
Moura has emerged as a leading voice of traditional fado just as the venerable idiom is enjoying a renaissance of popularity. As with jazz and country music in the U.S., tango in Argentina, samba in Brazil, fado sprang from the culture of working class people and over the years the style evolved from humble origins to win broad appeal. Today, as Moura proudly proclaims, "In Portugal, fado is for everyone”.
Her passionate voice and stage presence have won her a huge international following, drawn by her ability to cross over into other styles while retaining fado’s deep emotional commitment. Moura’s rapid ascent to global stardom has seen her perform in major concert halls all over the world and made fans and collaborators of The Rolling Stones and Prince, who travelled to Lisbon to work with her. Ana Moura is pouring her heart and soul into an ancient style, earning fado a well-deserved seat at the world’s bountiful musical feast.
