Now that the scope of the performance enhancement problem in baseball has been brought to light, the worthiness of several players careers have to be questioned…

What will be the message that comes from the Mitchell report...
Now that the scope of the performance enhancement problem in baseball has been brought to light the worthiness of several players careers have to be questioned…

Roger Clemens, Rafael Palmeiro, Barry Bonds, & Mark McGwire though not named in Mitchell Report would seem to head the list of players in that they are the players who would have been locks for enshrinement into the Baseball Hall of Fame…

A plaque in Cooperstown is considered the crowning Jewell in a player’s career & it remains elusive for some of the best players the game has known…

Given the money the modern star player makes, it couldn’t all be about bigger pay days…  It would appear attaining the immortality that comes with setting records are what drove many of the offenders to cheat the game & our children by using performance enhancing drugs…

Sure baseball, in desperate need of boost after the 95 strike, turned a blind eye during the Sosa-McGwire homerun derby, but at some point the players have to be held accountable for their actions… The recourse for the baseball fan is the denial of a place in the Hall…

Shoeless Joe Jackson remains locked out for his part in throwing the 1919 World Series… Ironically Jackson’s actions seem almost justifiable considering how underpaid he was by comparison to the modern player… One of the games greatest denied enshrinement for his involvement in one incident that took place over a 2 week period in an otherwise worthy career… It should also be noted that this activity took place in the post season where stats don’t count…

In his hey day Jim rice was the most feared right handed hitter in baseball, throughout the late 70’s to the early 80’s Rice was the one constant on a number of very potent offensive seasons for the Red Sox.. Seeing him break a bat with a check swing was one of the most phenomenal feats of strength I have ever witness on a ball field… But tragically, the all too early & rapid decline in his hitting ability leave Jim Ed on the outside looking in at Cooperstown…

I firmly believe it is the story of Jim Rice & players like him, which led to the performance enhancement era… Seeing how an otherwise worthy player like Jim Rice could be denied entrance, because of 2 seasons at the tale end of a remarkable 10 year period in his career, led many top players to conclude they must finish on top if they are ever to be honored by the Hall… Ego, not money, is what drove these extremely talented players to steal some sand from Father Time…

Besides they already got their money, so what message is sent to our children if these players who cheated over large portions of their careers are given the plaque of immortality, while a man who cheated once remains out, as well as one of the games greatest, who humbly accepted the hand fate dealt him & then walked away… Clean???

If Baseball wants to send a message to our children it’s that the Hall will embrace player’s like Rice, who knew when it was time to call it a career, long before a player who cheated by using drugs…
