Dartmouth, MA – Join Lloyd Center Research Director, Mark Mello and participate in a unique daylong scientific research project counting butterflies. Participants will spend the day actively walking different study areas counting butterflies. Mark Mello is one the Northeast’s leading experts on Lepidoptera (the classification Order that contains butterflies and moths) and is co-author of the field guide Butterflies Across Cape Cod. The book is available through the Lloyd Center’s Nature Shop. The North American Butterfly Association (NABA) sponsors this yearly butterfly count. The NABA Butterfly Count is an ongoing program to census the butterflies of North America (United States, Canada and partially Mexico) and to publish the results.
The Butterfly Count will be held on Saturday, July 21st from 9:00am – 3:00pm at the Lloyd Center’s Headquarters located at 430 Potomska Road in Dartmouth. In the event of rain, the Count will take place on Sunday, July 22nd from 9:00am – 3:00pm. The cost of the program is $8 for Lloyd Center members and $10 for non-members. A copy of the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) summary report may be purchased for an additional fee. Participants should bring a lunch, drinks will be provided. Long pants, a hat and bug repellent are recommended. Participants should also bring a change of shoes (one study site is quite wet). The Lloyd Center is the only area organization focused on educating the public about coastal and watershed issues, and conducting research on coastal ecosystems and endangered species. The Lloyd Center serves individuals, agencies, and organizations in southeastern New England (Rhode Island to Boston to Cape Cod). It
The Center cooperates on a broader level in coastal, environmental, and educational programming throughout New England, nationally and internationally.
The Center's school-based activities further expand their reach to urban audiences. A scholarship program also provides space for ten urban New Bedford students, mostly African-American and other minorities, in the Summer Program.
