Born premature at 3 pounds and 30 weeks old, six-year-old Sabine Charles faced a myriad of complications including a complex heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot and Pulmonary Artesia. Since her birth, she has had a total of three open heart surgeries at Children’s Hospital in Boston, a stroke and a series of seizures.
It was the stroke that brought her to Schwartz for physical, occupational and speech therapy through the Early Intervention Program.
A social worker at Children’s Hospital told Sabine’s mom, Carline that she might be eligible for the “Make a Wish” Foundation. Carline recalls “I called Make-A-Wish Foundation and they determined that we were eligible for a ‘wish.’ Sabine had been sharing her room and she wanted one that she could call her very own.” The Make A Wish Foundation did just that - they did a bedroom makeover for her with a Dora the Explorer theme and invited Dora herself to meet with little Sabine.
Carline is extremely grateful for everything that has been done for her family. Sabine is no longer eligible for OT, PT and Speech through her current insurance provider, however, Schwartz true to its mission and recognizing the importance of the continuity of care, continues to offer Sabine one-hour of free physical therapy each week.
Carline’s mom is grateful to Schwartz for “continuing my little girls care, despite our financial set backs.” She reflects that “Schwartz has been very, very helpful to my family. They provide me with the resources I need to get my family the care that it deserves. Schwartz is always thinking of us!”
