Schwartz Center for Children - Dartmouth MassachusettsThe Schwartz Center for Children hosted the Kiwanis Club of New Bedford’s recent weekly meeting on Tuesday, February 12. The Kiwanians presented the Center with snack goodies for the Center’s children and a Spinoza Bear for the Speech Therapy Department through it’s “Buddy Bear Project.”

A special education teacher and a communication specialist created Spinoza in 1984. They envisioned a soft, huggable bear that spoke and sang from the heart. The unique songs and stories that are played inside of Spinoza’s internal tape player provide the listener with words of encouragement, comfort, self-esteem, and friendship. All of these things combine to create a very magical bear.

The Spinoza Company was founded in Saint Paul, Minnesota. The "buddy bear project" was created in 1994 out of a desire to provide every child who is in a challenging situation or crisis with a constant, inspirational companion.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world, one child and one community at a time.

Kiwanians are volunteers changing the world through service to children and communities. Kiwanis members help shelter the homeless, feed the hungry, mentor the disadvantaged, and care for the sick. They develop youth as leaders, build playgrounds, raise funds for pediatric research, and much more. No problem is too big or too small. Why? Because working together, members achieve what one person cannot accomplish alone. When you give a child a chance to learn, experience, dream, and succeed, great things happen!
