The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra invites you to celebrate the passion and rebirth of the Spring Season with our “Romance of Spring” concert on March 29th.  Our Spring Concert brings acclaimed cellist Rhonda Rider to the Zeiterion to perform Dmitri Kabalevsky’s stunning Cello Concerto No. 2 in C minor.  The evening also boasts Beethoven’s great overture Coriolanus and Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8 in G Major, by far Dvorak’s most personal and “Czech” symphony.

The evening begins with Ludwig Van Beethoven’s passionately heroic Coriolanus Overture.  Beethoven illustrates in this dramatic composition the tragic story of the victorious Roman Patrician general Coriolan who was exalted and then banished after political dissent by the same people he heroically saved.  This single movement overture was written to precede the drama by the German poet, Heinrich Josef von Collin, and loosely follows the dramatic outline. It colorfully tells the tale of Coriolan’s self-inflicted moral torment as he chooses between vengeful justification and losing his life in order to spare his own innocent family.  Concluding the evening will be the masterfully crafted Symphony No. 8 in G Major by Antonin Leopold Dvorak.  Inspired by Bohemian folk music, Dvorak’s ravishing Symphony No. 8 is liberating with a “seemingly spontaneous flow of thematic ideas.”

The featured soloist for the evening, renowned cellist Rhonda Rider will perform Kabalevsky’s classic Cello Concerto No. 2 in C minor.  Ms. Rider is on the cello faculty of Chamber Music at The Boston Conservatory and Boston University, and was the founding member of the acclaimed Lydian Quartet.  She is currently a member of Triple Helix Piano Trio and regularly presents 50-60 concert appearances annually at such venues as Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Wigmore Hall, Concerts Spirituel de Geneve, Septembre Musique de L’Orne, American Academy in Rome, Moscow Conservatory, and Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The concert will be held March 29th at 8 p.m. and will be performed at the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center in downtown New Bedford.  For tickets, please call the Z box office at 508-994-2900 or online www.zeiterion.org.  In the effort to make the symphony more accessible, we are offering a special limited number of $20 tickets in a designated unsubscribed section of the theater.  Discount not available online, please call the Z Box Office (508) 994-2900 to take advantage of the special rate!  There will be a free pre-concert prelude with Dr. David MacKenzie at 6:45pm at the Zeiterion.  Tickets are $30-50, and student ticket prices are $13.  Student tickets include college students.  The NBSO also offers a 10% Senior Discount.

The NBSO would like to thank its season presenting sponsors Reynolds DeWalt Printing, Cardoza's Wine & Spirits, The Standard Times, and Sovereign Bank.  The Spring Concert is co-sponsored by Bayview Retirement Community, Surprenant and Beneski, SoCo Magazine, and Seamark Financial Services.
