A potentially dangerous man facing charges of child rape, indecent exposure, and indecent assault and battery of a disabled person escaped from custody today while at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford.
The fugitive, Anthony Flye, 38, of Nantucket and Swansea, was in New Bedford Superior Court today to be arraigned on the indecent exposure charge when he apparently jumped from the top of a stairwell and injured himself. Mr. Flye was transported to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of his apparent injuries and escaped from the hospital late this afternoon.
Mr. Flye was being held in jail on $500,000 cash bail prior to today's events. He resided at 9 Brinda Lane, Nantucket, during the weekdays and 18 Rowley St., Swansea, during the weekends. He has used several aliases in the past and has connections in Wareham, Martha's Vineyard, Rhode Island and Maine. Flye was initially arrested on these charges in mid-February outside his Nantucket home.
If the public has any information abut Mr. Flye's whereabouts or has seen him, they are urged to contact their local law enforcement agency.
