NEW BEDFORD, MA – The UMass Dartmouth Ceramics Club welcomes Penn State University Professor Chris Staley to the UMass Dartmouth Star Store on Wednesday, April 16, 2008, for a lecture and presentation of his work.

Renowned ceramic artist Chris Staley is Professor of Ceramic Arts at Penn State University in State College, PA.  Staley masterfully integrates classical and oriental influences and yet his work is unmistakably contemporary.  His vessels are not merely functional containers, but nuanced statements about the ongoing vitality—and necessity—of tradition, craft, and human touch in the computer age.  In an era in which electronic interventions mediate much of our commerce and conversation, Staley affirms the importance of hand-crafted forms that are made in harmony with elemental materials.

The lecture will take place Wednesday, April 16, 2008, at 7pm, in Room 240 of the Star Store Campus of UMass Dartmouth. Admission to this event is free of charge and open to the public. Seating capacity is limited—guests are advised to arrive early.

In addition, Staley will offer two demonstrations for UMass Dartmouth
students:
   • Wheelthrowing: Wednesday, April 16, at 10am • Room 431, Star Store
   • Handbuilding: Thursday, April 17, at 9:45am • Room 426, Star Store
