New Bedford 360 accepts Press Releases and Announcements from individuals, companies and organizations in the Greater New Bedford area. New Bedford, Massachusetts- This spring, the South End Youth Athletic Association (SEYAA) will celebrate 50 years of providing organized youth baseball programming to the children in the New Bedford community. In celebration of the league’s five decades of teaching the fundamentals of the game of baseball to New Bedford children, the SEYAA 50th Anniversary Committee has special festivities planned for “Opening Day 2008,” on April 27, 2008. Since its inception in 1958, the league has grown substantially from the initial six teams and now includes 8 Bronco teams (11-12 year olds), 10 Mustang teams (9-10 year olds), and 10 Pinto teams (6, 7 & 8 year olds).
A parade of the 28 teams consisting of approximately 400 youth baseball players will start off from Hazelwood Park at 10:00 AM and will proceed down Brock Avenue to Clegg Field where Mayor Scott W. Lang will throw the ceremonial first pitch. Leading the parade will be Mayor Scott Lang, many City Councillors, Miss New Bedford 2008, Marissa Louro, and former Red Sox player Brian Rose. Also participating in the parade will be three groups of color guards representing the Bristol County Sheriff’s Department, the New Bedford Fire Department, and the New Bedford Police Department. Police Officers who participated in the SEYAA Badges for Baseball program will be marching with their respective teams.
Many SEYAA alumni, including coaches and players have come together to try and make the 50th Anniversary celebration a success. SEYAA officials extend their sincere appreciation to those individuals who have lent their support. League President Dennis Messier said the long term success of the organization is rooted in the dedication of hundreds of volunteers committed to involving youth in positive recreational activities led by responsible adults.
On Friday June 6th, the league will be hosting an Alumni Night. Come see your old friends - refreshments will be served - pictures and t-shirts will be available for purchase!!!
