“Romeo and Juliet,” one of the most romantic ballets in classical repertoire, will be performed by the acclaimed St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre leaps its way onto the Zeiterion Stage on Saturday, May 3 2008 at 8pm. The story of Shakespeare’s tragic, star-crossed young lovers has been the basis for some of the most beautiful ballet works for more than two centuries. With new choreography by St. Petersburg Artistic Director Yuri Petukhov, the company who is known for its matchless precision, sophistication, and elegance will take your breath away in this classic tale.

Founded a quarter century ago in the birthplace of classical Russian ballet, St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre is one of the most distinguished companies in Russia. The younger sibling of the Kirov and Bolshoi ballets, St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre, founded in 1966 and headed by Artistic Director Yuri Petukhov, embodies the tradition of excellence associated with Russian dance. At home in St. Petersburg, the birthplace of Russian classical ballet, the company performs at the Mariinsky and Hermitage theatres.

Formed in 1966 under the original title "Theatre of Ballet," this relatively new dance troupe is a creation of the famous artist of the old Kirov Ballet Professor Peter Gusev,  who directed the Kirov Ballet from 1940-1950. Gusev had proven himself as a brilliant choreographer before creating the St.Petersburg Ballet. Among his other ballet experiences, he organized the Ballet Theatre in Beijing and the ballet schools in Shanghai and Guanchjou and worked as a ballet master in the Maly Opera and Ballet Theatre.
