Opening July 26 Ray Veary Play tells story of local fisherman’s widow
NEW BEDFORD, MA ---Ray Veary’s play, The Water Widow, ushers in Your Theatre, Inc.’s highly anticipated 61st Season on July 26 for a limited four performance run. Directed by Susan Fournier of Dartmouth, the play runs Thursday through Saturdays July 26-28, with a matinee Sunday, July 29. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. for all shows except the 3:00 p.m. Sunday matinee.
The play, a type of monument and a tribute to all the brave wives of the fishermen who risk their lives at sea, tells the tale of a local Portuguese Woman, born in 1911, who falls in love, marries a local fisherman and eventually suffers his loss at sea. The play has been crafted in the style of a Japanese Noh Drama making use of such devices as masks, basic music, dance, stylized movement and costumes in telling the story.
The Water Widow was originally commissioned by Culture*Park, and culled from C*P interview tapes with the New Bedford fishing community who participated in C*P’s Fathoms oral histories project. It premiered as a Culture*Park production, in the New Bedford National Park, in summer, 2004, directed by C*P Artistic Director Patricia A. Thomas and again at the 1st New Bedford Working Waterfront Festival.
The YTI cast consist of Lucy Bly (Old Woman/Young Woman), Elizabeth Rapoza (Narrator), Marie Averie (The Stranger) all of New Bedford. The choral dancers are Margo Wilson Beauregard of Fairhaven, Rosemary Ann Correia of Taunton, Rachel Fouts and Andrea Cantin of New Bedford and Paula Lauzon of Dartmouth who also designed the choral choreography. The musicians are Elizabeth Rapoza of New Bedford (flute), Ed Rooney of Westport and Johnathan Gillespie of New Bedford (percussions).
