The "Kids Rule" AHA! explodes on August 14th with Kids in motion. There is an exciting line up that includes Carabiner's climbing wall, skate jam, art activities, the WOW Mobile, live music and creative kid's activities. Adults will be able to enjoy live music, museums, art galleries, unique boutiques and good eats.

CUSTOM HOUSE SQUARE

    * Solstice Skateboarding will be hosting a skate jam from 6:30 p.m. to dusk.
    * Carabiner's presents a climbing wall, get up and get over it! 5p.m. to dusk.  

NEW BEDFORD WHALING NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK

·        Toe Jam Puppet Band in the garden at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (co-sponsored with AHA! and the Whaling Museum).

·        WHALE ( Waterfront Historic Area LeaguE) presents "Build A Historic House" - kids can assemble the architectural styles seen throughout New Bedford from 5 p.m. while supplies last.

·        View "Something fishy summer camp projects" and help create a Working Waterfront mural to be displayed at 2008 Working Waterfront Festival at the Corson Maritime Learning Center 5-8 p.m.

·        Living History Program; a re-enactment of a conversation of two women from the 1850's New Bedford whaling community at 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

WING'S COURT

    * Brick by Brick performance of Songs of HOPE, Love and Life and short theatrical contemporary musicals from 5-7 p.m.
    * Learn how to construct, paint and the reasons for using eco-friendly rain barrels with Annie Hayes from 5-7 p.m.

·        Joe Piper presents the O'Tooles Band at 7:15 p.m. and the Brian Boru Pipe Band at 8 p.m.

The New Bedford Ocean Explorium (174 Union Street) presents the 10 minute film "Once Upon a Tide" about inspiring ocean conservation at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m. Panel discussion to follow at 7:30 p.m. Discover marine life, up close and personal, as the WOW Mobile sets up shop on Purchase Street!  Origami sharks and penguins take shape at our outdoor creative stations.  

The New Bedford Free Public Library (613 Pleasant Street) presents with community partners, SouthCoast Children's Theatre and The Family Center are teaming up to bring " Alice in Wonderland" alive.  On the steps of the library, the SouthCoast Children's Theatre will sing songs from their production of "Alice" at 6 and 7:30 p.m. The Family Center will have "Alice" themed art projects in the library from 5:30 p.m.

Kids and youth open mic: Calling all aspiring young musicians, poets and performance artists.  If you have been waiting for a chance to express yourself.....here it is! Cummings Building Common Room (96 William Street, 2nd floor) from 6-9 p.m; sign up begins at 5 p.m.

Open House and fingerprint kits at the New Bedford Police Department, Downtown Station #1 (Pleasant Street) from 5-8 p.m.

The Rotch-Jones Duff House and Garden Museum (396 County Street) Back by popular demand, Kelly Zucco's "Showstoppers" and "Mission
Improvisation" directed by Gary Langevin; under the terrace tent at 6:30 p.m. Garden open; museum closed this evening.

Pilgrim United Church Home (634 Purchase Street) presents children's crafts games and root beer floats from 6-8 p.m. Pilgrim United Church of Christ (635 Purchase Street) presents tours of the Sanctuary including the Tiffany Mosaic and Stained Glass Windows. From 6:30 –8:30 p.m.

Live Music

Whaling City Sounds on Centre Street and AHA! presents Charles Xavier and the X-Men, featuring Dr. D, Danny Schwartz on percussion, Charles Xavier on keyboard,  Rick Britto on saxophones, Chris Poudrier on drums, and Mike Lavoie on bass. Jointly presented by Fiber Optic Center, Inc. Sets at 5:30 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.  

The Cafe Arpeggio (800 Purchase Street) featured performer is Thatcher Harrison, an extremely talented guitar player & singer, who happens to be six years old! from 6-7 p.m. Open mic follows from 7-10 p.m. hosted by Art Tebbetts.

ArtWorks! (384 Acushnet Avenue) presents the new exhibit Art Exposed: from Concept to Completion an exhibition that illustrates the processes involved behind creating a finished piece of art. From 5-8 p.m.

First time visitors may want to start AHA! Night at the National Park Visitor Center (33 William Street). Complete program flyers with maps are also available at all AHA! venues starting the Tuesday prior to each event.

Directions: From I-195 E or W. Take Exit 15 (Rte. 18). Follow Rte 18 to 2nd traffic signal; take a right onto Union St. At the first traffic signal take a right onto Second Street and take your first left for parking in Custom House Square or continue on two blocks to the Elm Street garage. On-street parking also available for free after 6 pm.
