New Bedford, Massachusetts- The New Bedford Health Department has announced that New Bedford’s “East and West Beach” have been reopened for swimming as of 9:00AM today.

In the week following a significant rainstorm, city health officials closed sections of New Bedford’s public East and West beaches as water-testing results showed levels of Enterococcus bacteria above safe levels in several designated swimming areas.

Testing results of water samples collected over the course of the past several days indicate that the concentration of Enterococcus bacteria at these locations has dropped back to safe levels for swimming.  Warning signs posted in the swimming area have been removed.  Water sampling is conducted at all city beaches on a weekly basis.  City health officials will continue to monitor the water quality at all municipal beaches for any significant changes.
