New Bedford, MA – The New Bedford Area Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the next Good Morning SouthCoast! business breakfast program on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. at the Hawthorne Country Club, 970 Tucker Road, Dartmouth. The October program is sponsored by the Greater New Bedford Workforce Investment Board. This fast paced morning program will help you start your business day with several interesting and informative segments.
The focus of the October breakfast is education and workforce development. Our featured speakers are Dr. Portia Bonner, new Superintendent of the New Bedford Public School System and Fred Clark, Chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education.

Dr. Portia Bonner took over as Superintendent of the New Bedford Public School system on July 1, 2008 after being selected from a nationwide search. As Superintendent, Dr. Bonner leads a system that includes nearly 2,000 employees, 27 schools, and over 13,000 students. Prior to assuming her new position, Dr. Bonner was Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction at Hamden Public Schools in Hamden, Connecticut.

Fred Clark is Chairman of the Board of Higher Education and Vice President of Mirrione Realty Corporation. He is the former Executive Officer of the Massachusetts State College Council of Presidents, the former trustee of Bridgewater State College and served as District Chief of Staff to the late Congressman John Joseph Moakley. Clark was appointed Chairman by Governor Patrick in August, 2007 to help implement his vision for educational improvement in the state. The Board of Higher Education is responsible for defining the mission of and coordinating the state’s system of public higher education and its many institutions that contribute to the future economic growth and development of the Commonwealth.

The October breakfast also features New Bedford area employers providing first-hand testimony about their experience with student-interns through the Connecting Activities partnership. Employers are key to the success of this important economic development initiative and play a critical leadership role in attracting and developing a strong workforce for the future. Young people are able to explore careers and gain critical skills that promote academic and career development.

Good Morning SouthCoast! is not a typical Chamber event but rather a high-profile, fast-paced, and educational breakfast program specifically geared towards executives, senior managers, professionals, and small business owners.

Don’t miss the region’s best morning gathering. The cost is just $18 for members and $24 for non-members and includes a buffet breakfast. Pre-registration is required.
