Southcoast Health System

Southcoast Health System, a not-for-profit charitable organization, is a community based health delivery system with multiple access points, offering an integrated continuum of advanced health services throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and East Bay, Rhode Island. It includes Southcoast Hospitals Group, formed in 1996 from the merger of Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

Southcoast has more than 40 ancillary facilities, including the Southcoast Health Van, home health care, hospice and infusion services, numerous outpatient medical services, an assisted living facility and a wellness center. For more information visit www.southcoast.org.

Southcoast is one of three community hospitals approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to perform open heart surgery and primary angioplasty beginning in Spring 2002.

YMCA Southcoast to waive joiner fee on new YMCA memberships for Southcoast blood donors NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Southcoast™ Blood Bank at St. Luke’s Hospital has announced the May schedule for community blood drives. A healthy incentive for Southcoast blood donors YMCA Southcoast has partnered with the Southcoast Blood Bank to offer donors a healthy incentive. Anyone who donates blood at the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke’s Hospital, or at any of the community blood drives hosted by the Southcoast Blood Bank, will receive a complimentary family guest pass to any YMCA SOUTHCOAST facility, and the Y will waive the joiner fee for any donor interested in a new YMCA membership (up to a $90 savings).
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The three hospitals that make up Southcoast™ Hospitals Group — Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham, and the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care in Fairhaven and Fall River — use approximately 1,300 pints of blood a month. Southcoast counts on volunteer donors to meet the needs of patients requiring life-saving treatments in emergencies, patients with cancer and other serious illnesses and patients in need of surgery.
Community Involvement Can Answer Critical Questions about Cancer Causes, Prevention (New Bedford, MA) —April 9, 2013—As it celebrates its 100th birthday, the American Cancer Society is looking to local residents to help finish the fight against cancer by reaching full enrollment in a historic research study. Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) will give scientists a better understanding of cancer causes and prevention. The Society is looking for local men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 from various racial/ethnic backgrounds with no personal history of cancer to help reach full enrollment of at least 300,000 people. Thanks to support from the City of New Bedford and Southcoast™ Centers for Cancer Care, part of the Southcoast Health System, local residents will have many opportunities to enroll in CPS-3:

Most people with the flu have mild illness and do not need medical care or antiviral medications. If you get sick with flu symptoms, in most cases, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people except to get medical care. If, however, you have symptoms of flu and are very sick or worried about your illness, contact your health care provider (doctor, physician’s assistant, etc.).

Southcoast™ Hospitals Group announces free vascular screenings during the month of October.

Regular vascular screenings can detect peripheral artery disease, or PAD, a potentially serious circulatory problem. The non-invasive screenings are performed by a trained nurse and take approximately 20 minutes. Patients should arrive 15 minutes prior to screening time.
The Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth today released the results of a study depicting Southcoast Health System’s economic contribution to regional and state economies, revealing a combined economic impact of $1.4 billion per year on the Massachusetts and Rhode Island economies alone.
