Southcoast Health System, a not-for-profit charitable organization, is a community based health delivery system with multiple access points, offering an integrated continuum of advanced health services throughout Southeastern Massachusetts and East Bay, Rhode Island. It includes Southcoast Hospitals Group, formed in 1996 from the merger of Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.
Southcoast has more than 40 ancillary facilities, including the Southcoast Health Van, home health care, hospice and infusion services, numerous outpatient medical services, an assisted living facility and a wellness center. For more information visit www.southcoast.org.
Southcoast is one of three community hospitals approved by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to perform open heart surgery and primary angioplasty beginning in Spring 2002.

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Southcoast Hospice & Palliative Care is looking for volunteers, including but not limited to, veterans and Portuguese speaking individuals in the Greater New Bedford and Wareham areas to provide emotional support to patients and their families.
“One thing all hospice volunteers have in common is a true desire to help,” said Jo-Ann Richard, Volunteer Coordinator at Southcoast Home Care, Hospice & Palliative Care & Infusion Services. “Some provide care and comfort to patients and their families while others prefer to assist with fundraising events, bereavement services, memorial planning, community networking, office tasks and other helpful duties.”

Southcoast lifts sibling restriction policy on maternity units

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Southcoast Hospitals has lifted the restriction on siblings in the maternity units. Children under the age of 18, who are not siblings to the new baby, will continue to be restricted from the maternity and pediatric units. In addition, no visitors with cold or flu symptoms will be allowed. The policy applies to Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Massachusetts Tobacco Cessation & Prevention Program (MTCP) honored Southcoast Hospitals Groups with its “2009 Make Smoking History Award.” It marked the first time MTCP gave such an award.Southcoast received the award for its efforts to help patients quit smoking through its implementation of the QuitWorks patient referral program.
