New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park and the Working Waterfront Festival are teaming up to offer 2 one-week summer camp programs for New Bedford children ages 9-10 (entering grades 4 & 5 in the fall of 2013). Designed to give kids an introduction to the history and culture of the working port from whaling days to the present, camp activities will include: hands-on marine science, arts and crafts, daily fieldtrips, chantey singing and more.

Southcoast™ Visiting Nurse Association, known in the community as Southcoast VNA, will host its 10th annual bereavement camp, “Camp Angel Wings,” in July. This is an exciting, fun-filled, two-day camp experience for children and teens, ages 6 through 15, who are grieving the loss of a loved one. The camp will be held on July 13 and 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Cathedral Camp for Boys & Girls, 167 Middleboro Road in East Freetown.

New Bedford, MA --Two events celebrating Cape Verdean history and culture will be held at the Main Branch of the New Bedford Public Library on July 1. “Our Cape Verdean Legacy: 1935-2013” will feature Anna Lima Delgado, the “Creola Genealogista” and internet blogger. The event starts at 7pm. Ms Delgado will draw upon her extensive knowledge of Cape Verdean history, genealogy and culture in the presentation and interpretation of the “Cape Verde Poor Relief Stereopticon Show. Experienced teachers will also be available to help students with math, science, English and history homework.
New Bedford, Massachusetts- The United States Department of Energy will recognize the City of New Bedford at a clean energy economy summit in Washington, D.C. this week. The Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy David Danielson will recognize New Bedford along with two other cities nationwide for its leadership in advancing clean energy economy and for its accomplishments through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG). The other two cities are San Antonio, Texas and Savannah, Georgia.

In September 2013, the Working Waterfront Festival will mark its’ tenth anniversary. To celebrate, we are presenting Portholes, a series of free, monthly programs designed to engage local residents and members of the commercial fishing industry in conversations about critical issues facing the working waterfront. The Portholes Project is partially funded through a grant from Mass Humanities. Each month’s programming centers around a theme. Programming during the month of May explores the Cultural Mosaic of the Working Port.

Fort Taber~Fort Rodman Historical Association Inc to hold World War I Living History Encampment May 4 and 5

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — Fort Taber~Fort Rodman Historical Association Inc. invites the public to attend a World War I Living History Encampment at Fort Rodman this weekend. Re-enactors portraying American, Canadian, German and Austro-Hungarian soldiers will be present to exhibit items and to talk about the soldiers of the First World War (1914-1918). The free event will take place on Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday, May 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside Fort Rodman at Fort Taber Park located at 1000C South Rodney French Bouleveard in New Bedford. YMCA Southcoast to waive joiner fee on new YMCA memberships for Southcoast blood donors NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The Southcoast™ Blood Bank at St. Luke’s Hospital has announced the May schedule for community blood drives. A healthy incentive for Southcoast blood donors YMCA Southcoast has partnered with the Southcoast Blood Bank to offer donors a healthy incentive. Anyone who donates blood at the Southcoast Blood Bank at St. Luke’s Hospital, or at any of the community blood drives hosted by the Southcoast Blood Bank, will receive a complimentary family guest pass to any YMCA SOUTHCOAST facility, and the Y will waive the joiner fee for any donor interested in a new YMCA membership (up to a $90 savings).

When Ty Law took the stage at the UMass Dartmouth Center for Marketing Research Celebrity/Scholarship Dinner, the first thing he said was that he would like to donate $5,000 to the Center’s scholarship program. NEW BEDFORD, Mass. — The three hospitals that make up Southcoast™ Hospitals Group — Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River, St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford and Tobey Hospital in Wareham, and the Southcoast Centers for Cancer Care in Fairhaven and Fall River — use approximately 1,300 pints of blood a month. Southcoast counts on volunteer donors to meet the needs of patients requiring life-saving treatments in emergencies, patients with cancer and other serious illnesses and patients in need of surgery.

The UMass Dartmouth Career Expo 2013 is next Wednesday, April 17. The expo is open to all UMass Dartmouth students and alumni. This is UMass Dartmouth’s biggest career event of the year. New Bedford, Massachusetts- Mayor Jon Mitchell today announced the availability of a new online feature on the City’s website that enables neighborhood residents to submit photos and complaints regarding problem properties directly to the Mayor’s Neighborhood Task Force. The Task Force is a multi-departmental team that has been working for more than a year to crack down on nuisance properties owned largely by absentee landlords, to improve the quality of life in New Bedford neighborhoods.

Community Involvement Can Answer Critical Questions about Cancer Causes, Prevention (New Bedford, MA) —April 9, 2013—As it celebrates its 100th birthday, the American Cancer Society is looking to local residents to help finish the fight against cancer by reaching full enrollment in a historic research study. Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) will give scientists a better understanding of cancer causes and prevention. The Society is looking for local men and women between the ages of 30 and 65 from various racial/ethnic backgrounds with no personal history of cancer to help reach full enrollment of at least 300,000 people. Thanks to support from the City of New Bedford and Southcoast™ Centers for Cancer Care, part of the Southcoast Health System, local residents will have many opportunities to enroll in CPS-3:
